The contract is unique, but I am unique: Cristiano Ronaldo at the inauguration of Al Nassr

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is a unique player, declaring that “in Europe, my job is done” as the Portuguese revealed he turned down several top teams to join Al Nassr in his introduction for the Saudi Arabian club.

Ronaldo has won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award five times and the Champions League five times, while also counting multiple Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A titles among an enviable trophy.

After an acrimonious departure from Manchester United in November, Ronaldo said he had been courted by clubs around the world but signed a deal until 2025 with Al Nassr.

Various outlets have reported that the former United, Real Madrid and Juventus striker’s salary exceeds £160m a year, making the 37-year-old the highest-paid footballer in history.

In his first public appearance with his new club, Ronaldo told a press conference: “I feel very good. I am very proud to make this big decision in my life.

“In Europe, my work is done; I won everything, I played in the most important clubs in Europe and for me now it’s a new challenge.

“This is a great opportunity. Nobody knows it but I had many opportunities in Europe, many clubs in Brazil, in Australia, in the United States and even in Portugal.

“Many clubs tried to sign me, but I gave my word to this club to develop not only football but other parts of this amazing country.”

Ronaldo wore a suit when addressing the assembled media, with the only questions coming from an Al Nassr official, before changing into his new club kit for his presentation at Mrsool Park stadium.

Ronaldo added: “I am a unique player. There I broke all the records. I want to break some records here. This contract is unique but I am a unique player, so for me it is normal.

“Many people speak and give their opinions but they really don’t know anything about football. It is not the end of my career to come to Saudi Arabia. I don’t really care what people say.”

Ronaldo, whose United contract was terminated in November shortly after criticizing the club in a television interview with Piers Morgan, was greeted by thousands of elated fans when he took the stage at Mrsool Park.

He said in a brief onstage interview: “I’ll do my best for this club” before posing for photographs and then autographing and kicking balls around to the assembled crowd.

Chants of ‘Ronaldo’ and his characteristic ‘siu’ celebration resounded constantly throughout the stadium before the presentation ended with Ronaldo accompanied on the pitch by his children and his partner Georgina Rodríguez.

Al Nassr head coach Rudi Garcia, a former Roma, Marseille and Lyon player, hailed Ronaldo as a major coup for the club.

“Cristiano is one of the best players in the world, he is a legend,” Garcia said. “In my life I have seen that the great, great players like Cristiano are the easiest to handle.

“We are here to win, nothing more.”
