Love Island star Jack Fowler says he suffered an allergic reaction on the flight

Love Island star Jack Fowler said his throat closed up and he felt his tongue begin to swell “within seconds” of being served ice cream with nuts on a flight, despite repeated reminders to staff that he had a life-threatening allergy.

The 27-year-old described himself as “extremely lucky” to have immediately noticed something was wrong with the vanilla ice cream and spat it out before discovering that crushed pistachios were hidden inside.

The former reality show contestant, who said he was having trouble breathing, said it was the second time during his flight with Qatar Airways that he had been served nuts, having been offered cakes with nuts after boarding the plane.

He wrote on Instagram: “I told the @qatarairways hostess five times that I was anaphylactic to nuts (life-threatening allergy). As well as asking for peace of mind when each meal was served to me, which was nut free.

“Getting nuts TWICE is a huge fail from @qatarairways. Within seconds I couldn’t breathe right after eating the crushed pistachios under my vanilla ice cream.

“My throat closed up and I felt like my tongue was swelling up. They told me vanilla ice cream was my safest choice. it was not @qatarairways, you have failed in so many ways. I am extremely lucky. The next person might not be.”

In the post, the reality star warned all airlines that more needed to be done to protect people with severe dietary needs.

He said the pilot had contacted different countries to divert him for treatment, but it wasn’t necessary because Fowler had reacted so quickly.

“But I can’t begin to tell you how terrifying that was. I told you five times that I’m allergic. You gave me nuts twice. I could have died. The next person might not be so lucky. An absolute disaster,” she added.

The ice cream incident came an hour after Fowler detailed on social media what he thought was a lucky escape by avoiding nuts in a cake he was served.

He wrote on his Instagram story: “I told my host at the beginning of the flight that I am anaphylactic to all nuts (extremely allergic to nuts). He made a note and assured me that it wouldn’t be a problem.

“After selecting my meals, I was later served pies with walnuts. Luckily I saw them and didn’t eat them. And when I notified my hostess, he was very sorry.

“But this is the kind of situation that could have gone so wrong. Me eating a midair nut even though I even picked up an EpiPen would have given me severe shock and quite possibly died.

“We would have had to divert and land to get me treated in time. The moral of this story is: if you’re a flight attendant reading this, make sure you have a system that works and prevent this kind of thing from happening.”

In the post, she also encouraged allergy sufferers to speak up and not “feel like they’re being an inconvenience” because they have a dietary requirement.

Fellow Love Island stars Montana Brown, Ellie Brown, Wes Nelson and Kaz Crossley shared messages of relief at surviving the incident on Instagram.

Meanwhile, musician Tom Zanetti said: “That’s crazy. I’m glad you knew what you were doing and I’m glad you’re okay buddy.”

A Qatar Airways spokesperson said: “The health and safety of passengers is of the utmost importance to Qatar Airways and we require all passengers with severe food allergies to notify the airline at least 48 hours in advance of their flight with a complete medical information form (MEDIF) as indicated on our website.

“The airline will work with the passenger to reduce the risk of contamination, but since the flights are public, an allergen-free environment is not guaranteed.

“We are aware of an issue involving a passenger who had a reaction to nuts on board and we are investigating the incident.”
