England great Michael Owen said on Thursday that the Premier League-winning Jurgen Klopp’s side is the best Liverpool team he has ever seen. Owen said he is delighted to see Liverpool clinch the league title after 30 years of wait.
Liverpool on Thursday were crowned the Premier League champions after Manchester City lost to Chelsea 1-2 at Stamford Bridge. The title for the Reds comes with 7 matches remaining – a new record in England’s top-flight football.
Liverpool won the Champions League last season and finished with 97 points but it wasn’t enough for them to end the wait as Manchester City took the title after finishing with a point more.
However, Liverpool have been unstoppable this season, having already won 86 points with just one defeat. Klopp’s men could finish with the record for most number of points won in a Premier League season.
Speaking on Star Sports broadcast for the Premier League after Liverpool’s triumph, Michael Owen said Jurgen Klopp will go down as one of the Liverpool legends for what he has achieved already.
“Jurgen Klopp needs the biggest pat on the back because Brendan Rodgers got close, he had a great team but this team now is I mean he will go down as an absolute legend of Liverpool football for what he has done already and the sky’s the limit for this team can do in the future. It’s just an unbelievable moment,” Owen said.
‘Klopp has taken it to a whole new level’
Owen, who won 5 major honours during his time with Liverpool from 1996 to 2004, said it was an agonising wait over the last 30 years and that he is delighted Klopp has ended the fans’ wait.
“Yeah, nobody can say they don’t deserve it. Not just for what they are at the moment, they have come 2nd so many times in the last years.
“I have been part of teams that have striven to win that title. First of all, it was Manchester United in the way, then the likes of Arsenal, then Chelsea. Every time, you felt like getting closer and closer it would just be taken away.
“And then you win a Cup, it gives you more confidence to win the Premier League. But it just wouldn’t happen.
“But finally, finally, Liverpool have got their hands on their trophy. It’s just great. I am so happy for so many people.
“I have got no arguments again that this is the best Liverpool team I have ever seen. I used to get excited to go to Anfield when Brendan Rodgers was in charge. The Sterlings, the Suarez and Sturridge that trio I didn’t think it could get better than that.
“But Jurgen Klopp has taken it to a new level, a level that I didn’t think was possible. The intensity and energy is outstanding. It’s scary to think how long this team could compete at the top level.”
