Amidst complaints of non-availability of ambulances in the state, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Thursday sought a report from his department on the availability of ambulances in the state.

In a recorded message, Tope asserted that the Maharashtra government is planning to regulate the rates of private ambulances. “We will make the ambulances available free of cost for coronavirus patients,” he said.

The minister said that people will have to live with the coronavirus till a vaccine is available. “SMS social distancing, mask and sanitizer is the key. We are soon coming up with a notification to regulate their prices,” Rajesh Tope stated.

The state health minister also informed the public that the doubling rate of coronavirus cases in the state has gone up to 30 days. “Our death rate is 60 per million which is lesser than the rate of 400 to 600 deaths per million in developed countries.”

However, Maharashtra’s death rate has slightly gone up to 4.5 per cent whereas the national average is 3 per cent. “We are trying to further bring down the death rate,” Rajesh Tope said.

Tope also stated that the government has been conducting 25,000 tests in Mumbai and 20,000 tests in the rest of Maharashtra each day. “I hope the antigen tests, which give results in one hour, would be a game-changer. The ICMR has given its nod for these tests which cost Rs 450,” he said. These tests will be used for frontline workers like doctors, nurses, health workers and policemen. “We have procured one lakh antigen tests,” Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope added.
