Bilbao, Jan 9 (EFE).- Athletic Club, generating more play and opportunities despite not having a great game, missed the opportunity that presented itself to return to the Champions League positions in which it reached the break league for the World Cup, drawing goalless against Osasuna in San Mamés.

It was an exercise in incompetence and ineffectiveness for the ‘lions’ in a game that they dominated from start to finish over a rival who seemed delighted throughout the duel with the point that gave them the initial 0-0.

Even so, the team led by Jagoba Arrasate had at the end, in the 89th minute, the great chance of the match, a ball behind the local defense in which they were left alone in front of Unai Simón Pablo Ibáñez and Kike García. But the international goalkeeper highlights his hierarchy by pounced on the ball and preventing the two visiting forwards from touching it.

That was the occasion that prevented a bitter 0-0 for Athletic, who lost the opportunity to return not only to the ‘Champions’ zone but even to return to the European positions, and sweet for an Osasuna that continues in the cut of the continental fight in the table although without being able to overcome the Bilbao team.

A game began without much rhythm in which, however, Athletic quickly took control. That he did not stop reaching the rival area, although without specifying hardly any real danger in the multitude of occasions in which he stood up front or on the wings with possibilities.

Curiously, Valverde’s men had their first chance on the counterattack, in a ball behind the defense that Sancet led down the right wing, who had a first pass to Nico but preferred to wait for Guruzeta, who did not connect from the front with precision .

Yuri tried to surprise Aitor from a distance, who responded well, and De Marcos reached the bottom line with options, but the Lezama-bred goalkeeper was also attentive to save his cross.

After the first quarter of an hour the game became bland, within the total domain of the locals, although Osasuna threatened with a throw-in towards Budimir that entangled the local defense until De Marcos appeared to prevent Darko from finishing off in the area little.

After half an hour, the locals once again made a couple of good opportunities that Nico and Guruzeta did see a point to take advantage of. The umpteenth shot from the edge of the area that he and his teammates were unable to send between the three sticks went a little wide to the young international.

‘Guru’ did find a goal in a loose ball that fell in the area that Sancet had fought for, but Aitor made it clear that he would react like a cat under sticks is one of his main qualities.

The second half, more even in the game, did not improve on the first and just a few crosses without a shot from the older Williams, De Marcos, Muniain and Yuri created some danger in the area. Osasuna tried it with a shot from Torró that, although it went wide, ended up in a corner.

Already with Berenguer and Muniain, who was missed, Athletic threw themselves into the visiting area, where Iñaki Williams recorded that the definition is not his thing, missing two good chances against Aitor.

Raúl García and Villalibre also entered the field, but things did not change in the Bilbao attack and it was Osasuna who had the chance to win. But Unai Simón made it clear why he is international.
